Why does it matter?

The Sejm adopted a resolution to support the European Parliament resolution on the White Paper on the future of European defence. 220 MPs voted for, against 171, no 1 abstained. The PiS and the Confederacy were opposed.

The resolution adopted states that "The Sejm of the Republic of Poland, based on concern for the safety of the Republic of Poland, expresses its full support for the solutions contained in the European Parliament resolution of 12 March 2025 on the White Paper on the future of European defence. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland underlines the request to increase the engagement and function of European states within the NATO defence structure".

The EP resolution mentioned in the resolution concerns strengthening the EU's defence. The amendment proposed by the PO-PSL delegation to the European People's organization (EPP) recognising the Shield of the East as a flagship task for EU common safety was adopted. The paper was adopted by the EP by a majority (419 to 204). The resolution was not supported, among others, by Euro MPs from the Law and the Confederation.

What did Donald Tusk say?

"They had a choice: support the resolution or shame. They chose disgrace, and the resolution was passed anyway. PiS and Confederate again against the Shield of the East and European unity against Russian aggression," wrote Donald Tusk. The Prime Minister was not present at the Sejm on Thursday as he is in Brussels.
