AP explains the fact that the Gulf of Mexico has been utilized for over 400 years.

Donald Trump made the decision to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico shortly after taking office as president of the United States again. This was met with large opposition from another countries, which argued that it was a unilateral decision and made without the consent of the another countries that lie over this water, Mexico and Cuba. Trump, however, did not intend to ask anyone's approval to do so.
