While Europe and the US are making large efforts for peace in Ukraine, China is only observing U.S. president Donald Trump's negotiating tactics. Experts say Beijing will proceed to support Moscow.

– China welcomes all efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis and direct contacts between the US and Russia," said Chinese government spokesperson Mao Ning on Monday (18.08.201025) in Beijing. Both countries must guarantee "a political solution to the crisis", she added.

In the Russian war against Ukraine, China is considered a close ally of Moscow, but do not actively participate in fresh events. The gathering of U.S. president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin in Alaska, however, is simply a good chance for China, as Politologist Ja Ian Chong of the National University of Singapore says: "In this way Beijing can observe Trump's negotiating tactics in stressful situations".

Deal or no deal?

President Trump called on Ukraine to make territorial concessions in exchange for a comprehensive peace agreement. The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski always powerfully rejected these demands. On his platform fact Social Trump increased the pressure: "President of Ukraine Zelenski can almost immediately end the war with Russia if he wants. Or he can keep fighting." Prior to that, Trump had shared work for the Russian assault war with Ukraine.

The details of the possible compromise Trump discussed on Monday (18.08.201025) at the White home with Zelenski and another European leaders specified as European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

For Trump everything is "to negotiate"

“In China, there was an impression that everything was up for negotiation from the US,” says Wen-Ti Sung, a investigator in the Global China Hub task in Washington think tank Atlantic Council. "China's ears say this: Beijing is eager to put aside values and political differences erstwhile negotiating with another countries. And it seems Trump feels the same way.

However, Trump's "inconsistency" besides means unpredictability for China, as stated by a political scientist in a DW interview. – Beijing will carefully argue during the gathering with Trump. Donald Trump could have held a position before this meeting. But he can spontaneously change his mind. And it's not rather clear what direction it's going to go in.

Elasticity besides in Taiwan?

There are a number of controversial disputes that occupy politicians in Beijing and Washington: Taiwan, the South China Sea and trade disputes – these are just a fewer examples.

In an interview with the American Fox News station on Friday (15.08.201025) Trump betrayed that Chinese president Xi Jinping was about to tell him that China would not attack Taiwan during his presidency. Shortly thereafter, the Chinese Embassy in Washington announced that Taiwan's issue was "the most crucial and delicate topic" in relations between China and the US, without referring straight to Trump's statement.

China considers Taiwan to be a rebellious state and in 2005 passed a bill legalising the usage of armed forces in the event of Taiwan's declaration of independence. Taiwan rejects claims to it from the People's Republic of China. De jure Taiwan is referred to as ‘the Republic of China’.

However, Ian Chong suspects that Trump's last message on Taiwan was directed to global public alternatively than to Beijing. “From what we have seen so far, Trump likes to present himself as a kind of peacemaker,” he said in a conversation with DW.

Beijing – Putin's friend and ally

In the war in Ukraine, since Russia's attack on Russia, China has been a neutral organization in efforts to resolve the crisis. "There is no reason for China to deviate from its existing position on the Ukrainian crisis," said DW expert Wen-Ti Sung of Think Tank Atlantic Council. Beijing doesn't talk about the Russian assault war.

In the West, China is criticized for maintaining a war machine. Despite sanctions, China exports dual-use goods to Russia, specified as electronics, building materials and machinery, which can be utilized in both the civilian and military sectors. China rejects these charges.

The White home responds with additional criminal duties for countries importing Russian oil. China and India stay its biggest recipients. As of August 27, additional criminal duties of 25 percent will be imposed on imports from India to the US. According to Trump, akin sanctions are besides possible for China.

"Pekin is most likely convinced that he has much more influence than India," Chong claims. During trade talks between China and the US, the deadline for entry into force of the criminal duties was late extended for another 90 days, until 10 November. Chong adds that China besides does not intend to "in a fundamental way" change its relations with Russia.

At the end of August, president Vladimir Putin of Russia is expected to visit Beijing. president Chin Xi invited him to the celebration and military parade on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of planet War II in Asia, which will take place on September 3.
