date:23 October 2025 Editor: Anna
“I never met John Paul II, I never had specified an opportunity, but it meant a large deal to me. I joined the seminary in the fall of 1978. erstwhile I was having conversations and exams, Paul VI was Pope. erstwhile I crossed the threshold of the seminary, John Paul I was Pope, but already in October of that year John Paul II was Pope and he was Pope for all the years of my seminary formation and for the first 19 years of my priesthood," says Bishop Robert Barron, author of the book “A Journey to the Heart of Faith. Catholicism”, which was published in Polish by our publishing house.
The priest besides recalls the minute erstwhile John Paul II arrived in Washington. "I remember 1979, [Pope] was 59 at the time. It was apparent that he was an actor and an athlete, full of life, standing in a car, emanating assurance and joy. He went up the stairs in front of the sanctuary, and we all, young, shouted “John Paul II, we love you” (John Paul II, we love you). Finally, the Pope approached the microphone and said “John Paul II loves you” (John Paul II loves you). And he immediately added, ‘he loves you more, due to the fact that he loves you with a microphone’ (he loves you more due to the fact that he loves you with a microphone)’, says the American bishop.
Bishop Barron besides recalls the extraordinary sermon of human dignity that Pope Pole gave in 1979 in Washington, D.C., National Mall.
"Every human life - from conception to all stages - is sacred due to the fact that man was created in the image and likeness of God," said John Paul II. "Nothing surpasses the greatness and dignity of the human person."
“At the time we all felt something fresh was happening,” Bishop Barron recalls. “There was a fresh wind in the Church, and there was a large personality. Yes, there was a large personality. 1 of the top blessings of my life was that this personality appeared just erstwhile I entered the seminary. For me and many of my generation John Paul II was the leading star”, declared a priest.
