"For You Polish and Your Glory" — Another March of the Przemysl and Lviv Eagles

On December 17th, another March of Przemysl and Lviv Eagles was held in Przemysl. The event was organized by the All-Polish Youth in cooperation with the Foundation Yesterday and next day and the Association of the Industrial Hearts.

The participants of the March took part in Mass celebrated in the Franciscan Church in Przemyśl. The commemoration of heroes of the fight for Polishness Przemyśl and Lviv took place in the glow of torches. Above the assembly were the white-red flags and banners with Szczerbek, a symbol of Polish nationalism. A banner “For You Polish and Your Glory” was carried at the front of the walk. At the end of the assembly, a banner with images of Orląt was besides developed at the flares of pyrotechnics and the inscription “Glory to the Defenders of Polish lands” on the gold ribbon.

The march ended at the Memorial of the Przemysl Orląts with speeches of the president of the All-Polish Youth, president of the ellipse of Rzeszow Youth of All Poland, and prof. Andrzej Zapalowski. Before, however, the speeches were held and the last marching luminaire was shown, the participants laid flowers under the monument of the Sibir exiles and the victims of Katyn standing on the route.

Memory of the heroism of the Eagles

In the collective historical memory of Poles the most was the Orlęta Lwowskiego, but in another places Poles besides had to fight with Ukrainians about the affiliation of the cities in which they lived. Przemyśl was yet occupied by Poles in the second half of November 1918, but it was not the end of Polish-Ukrainian struggles for the city. erstwhile Polish troops (including soldiers from Przemyśl) occupied Lviv, the command of the Ukrainian Halician Army decided to cut them off from the remainder of Poland. At the beginning of December, Ukrainian artillery could shoot down the centre of Przemyśl. Thanks to the generosity of Polish youth, the city was defended. On December 13, 1918, the conflict of Nizankowice took place, in which many young people died heroically. That day, the Poznań Girl Scout Iren Bentschówn, whose body was disgraced by Ukrainian enemies, died.

After the final strengthening of the Polish power in Przemysl, scouts took part in organizing plebiscites in Spiš and Orava. As the Bolshevik threat approached, they besides fought for their homeland. The monument of Przemysl Orląt was erected in 1938. During the war, with the approval of the German occupier, it was destroyed by Ukrainian chauvinists. A monument was unveiled in 1994.
