The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the cause of the engine issue, which occurred as the aircraft was accelerating for takeoff.

Delta Air Lines has emphasized its commitment to passenger safety while addressing operational challenges caused by the incident.

Delta Air Lines (DL) flight DL2668 was scheduled to depart Atlanta (ATL) for Minneapolis-St. Paul (MSP) on Friday morning.

However, during takeoff, the pilots of the 21-year-old Boeing 757 detected an “engine issue” and performed an emergency stop. Passengers were evacuated onto the tarmac using emergency slides as the crew followed safety procedures.

Eyewitness footage captured dramatic scenes of firefighters extinguishing flames in the starboard engine as passengers exited the aircraft onto the icy runway.

The airline confirmed that 201 passengers, along with four flight attendants and two pilots, were onboard the flight. Although Delta initially reported no injuries, airport authorities later confirmed four minor injuries, with one individual transported to the hospital.

In its statement, Delta apologized for the disruption, reiterating its priority of ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew.

“Our focus is to address their immediate needs and get them to their destinations safely,”

FAA Investigation and Operational Impacts

The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident, which occurred around 9:05 a.m. local time. In its official statement, the agency confirmed the aborted takeoff and evacuation, stating, “The FAA will investigate.”

Additionally, the FAA issued a temporary ground stop for all Delta departures to Atlanta, compounding the airline’s operational challenges.

Severe winter weather further strained Delta’s home base operations, reducing the airline’s planned Friday schedule by approximately 10%.

This disruption raised concerns about the airline’s ability to recover quickly and avoid issues similar to last year’s operational meltdown that stranded thousands of passengers.

Airline’s Response

Delta’s crisis response centered on minimizing passenger inconvenience and ensuring safe onward travel. The airline worked closely with airport authorities and emergency services to manage the incident and assist passengers.

Passengers praised the flight crew’s quick decision-making and adherence to safety protocols, which likely prevented more serious injuries.

The FAA’s findings will likely offer insights into the mechanical failure and any procedural gaps that need addressing.

Similar Incident

On 3rd August 2023, passengers evacuated Delta Air Lines flight DL1437 after a tire on the Boeing 757’s landing gear burst during touchdown at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL).

The incident took place at 6 p.m. when the left main gear tire blew out during a firm landing. According to the FAA, passengers exited the plane through emergency exits on both sides. The flight had departed from Richmond International Airport (RIC) in Virginia.

A passenger described the turbulent landing, stating that one tire burst while another tore apart, causing the aircraft to skid along the runway. After the evacuation, Delta arranged for buses to transport passengers to the airport terminal, ensuring their safe relocation.
