And outside, there is simply a violent debate, both in parliament and in the media, about the anticipation of passing a law to reduce the prison conviction imposed on the erstwhile president and his political colleagues. Proponents of punishing coup organizers went out on the streets protesting the drafts of the fresh law. The subject of the demonstration is the slogan “Congress is an opponent of the people.”
At present, the only legal way to reduce the punishment for Bolsonaro is to apply for his eligibility for the state rehabilitation programme ‘Ler Liberta’, or ‘Reading Releases’. The "Reading Releases" programme was created in 2018 as a tool to aid convicted people return to civilian society. Participation in the programme is optional and consists of reading recommended reading and writing an essay on each of them. Essays must be approved by a state school that deals with the reintegration of people after being punished with restrictions on freedom. Any reading plus approved essay will reduce the punishment by... 4 days. The maximum number of books is 12 per year. This allows the punishment to be reduced by 48 days each year. Participation in this program requires the approval of the justice issuing the sentence, in the case of Jair Bolsonaro, it is Alexandre de Moraes, president of the ultimate Court.
The list of readings approved to the program includes 372 items. It contains books of Brazilian classical literature, specified as works of the celebrated Clarice Lispector, biographies of celebrated characters specified as Martin Luther King, sociological and philosophical books. The list includes "criminal and punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky, "Process" by Franz Kafka, and "I'm inactive Here", a poignant communicative of the Brazilian military dictatorship murdered by MP Rubens Paiva described by his son, Marcel Rubens Paiva (a movie based on this fresh received an Academy Award for Best global movie in 2025). There is besides the work of Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman "Globalization and what results for people".
The choice of books for the "Reading Releases" program contrasts very powerfully with Bolsonaro's violent statements, which praised the military dictatorship and repressive punishment policy.
I wonder if he will apply for inclusion in this program and how the recommended readings will affect his views. I'm certain Dostoevsky will be useful to him, but he must be doubtful about changing his views. It should be remembered that the conspirators planned in an operation called the Punhal Verde e Amarelo (Green-yellow knife) to execution key figures specified as current president Lula, Vice president and president of the ultimate Court, and the name of the operation was inspired by the barbaric night of long knives, during which night of June 30, 1934, the opponents of Adolf Hitler were murdered.
Many Brazilians find it tragic that there is inactive a large group of supporters of Bolsonaro in the country. I don't think they've done their past lessons. besides evil were attempts to interfere with president Donald Trump of the United States in the sovereign decision of the ultimate Court of Brazil. And the "Reading Releases" programme is possibly worthy of spreading in Poland as well. I wonder what reading would be proposed to Zbigniew Ziobrze or Mariusz Kamiński.
