Despite Article 9 of the Svalbard Treaty of 1920 (signed by 46 countries, including the US, Norway and France), which states that this area cannot be utilized for “war purposes” should not be considered as a full demilitarised zone. Formally, it is part of Norway, a NATO member, and there are increasing concerns that as tensions proceed on the Russia-West line, this area will be able to become an area in which an armed conflict in the Arctic will happen at any time.
