Support for Ukraine, the improvement of European defence capabilities, the issue of Europe's strategical autonomy and how to deepen cooperation between the parliaments of the European States – these are the main topics raised during the Conference of Presidents of the Committee on abroad Affairs of the European Parliaments. Poland was represented at the gathering by Paweł Kowal, president of the Committee on abroad Affairs of the Polish Parliament.
The conference was held on 28 May in Paris. The gathering was attended by the Chair of the Committee on abroad Affairs of the parliaments of the associate States of the European Union, national parliaments and the European Parliament.
In his speech, president Paweł Kowal stressed the importance of close cooperation between European countries in relation to the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and the request to build permanent mechanisms for coordinating parliamentary activities in the field of safety and abroad policy. He besides presented the concept of an global parliamentary conference, which will be held in Warsaw in mid-2027 at the initiative and at the invitation of the talker of the Polish Parliament Vladimir Czarzaste.
Conference participants adopted a joint declaration confirming their support for territorial sovereignty and integrity Ukraine and stressed the request to keep political, economical and military support for the fighting state. The Declaration besides highlighted the request to further strengthen European defence capabilities and make cooperation between parliaments of democratic states.
On the margins of the conference, the president of the Polish Parliament's abroad Affairs Committee invited his counterparts from France and Germany to attend the gathering of the Chairs of the abroad Affairs Committees of the Weimar Triangle Parliaments to be held in Warsaw in mid-July this year. The aim of the gathering will be to further strengthen parliamentary cooperation in the Weimar format and to make common positions on key challenges for European security.
