Three kings, six complaints
On 6 January, single-sex couples appeared in the “Question for Breakfast”. The program, which was run by Katarzyna Cichopek and Maciej Kurzajewski, raised controversy among any viewers due to the fact that 1 of the guests presented a rainbow flag and announced that "on January 6, homophobia ended".
Not all viewers liked the situation, especially since the bold coming out took place on the day erstwhile the Catholic Church celebrated the celebration of the Lord's Revelation, besides known as the Feast of the 3 Kings.
As a result, the National Broadcasting Council received six complaints from viewers regarding the conversation with single-sex couples in this program. KRRiT's press secretary, Teresa Brykczyńska, mentioned in her complaints allegations of "proposing homosexual relationships, inappropriate content at the Feast of the 3 Kings and negative impact on minors". In accordance with the procedure, the head of the National Council asked the Polish tv to evidence the program and position on this matter.
KRRiT looked into the case
According to the information provided by Virtual Media, the National Broadcasting Council decided on the issue of the "Asking for Breakfast" programme and concluded that there was no violation of the law. Therefore, TVP2 will not be punished.
The investigation did not uncover any infringement which could lead to the application of the law of liability to the consignor, as stated by Agnieszka Gniado from the cabinet of the KRRiT President.
The slot explains that the discussion in the program included the situation of single-sex couples in Poland in the context of legalization of partnerships in Estonia since 1 January 2024 and the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights of 12 December 2023, which confirmed the right of single-sex couples to request formal regulation of their position in their country.
Prior Prejudice
In the past, tv Polska presented the LGBT+ community only in a negative light. Jakub Kwieciński and Dawid Mycek pointed out a long-term negative run against the LGBT+ community on TVP, which lasted 8 years. PiS tv portrayed her as a threat to the family. Kwieciński, to whom TVP did not extend the contract after the publication of the video "Love Us for Christmas" featuring 7 homosexual couples, later won a court case for discrimination due to sexual orientation.
In the context of an episode of the breakfast program, which was affected by complaints, the KRRiT noted that the discussion did not compare homosexual relationships with heterosexuals and promoted no lifestyle, but focused on the current legal position and possibilities of surviving together single-sex couples.
