What will Leon XIV do with the conventional Mass? He has respective options to choose from, says American Vaticanist Edward Pentin.

Pentin in the National Catholic registry quoted the past of the dispute over the Trident liturgy, especially in the context of the actions of Popes Benedict XVI and Francis, well known to readers of the portal PCh24.pl.

In view of the fact that the restrictions introduced by Francis are inactive implemented in various dioceses in the world, especially in the US, they origin appeals to Leon to retreat them – or at least to revise them, Pentin writes.

The writer referred to respective hierarchs of the Church, who have called in fresh weeks to facilitate the conventional celebration of the erstwhile liturgy. Among them were Cardinals Gerhard Müller and William Goh, as well as Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. Cardinal Kurt Koch can be added to those mentioned by Pentin.

A writer pondering the possible ways of Leon XIV's action referred to the opinion presented by conventional liturgy expert Peter Luczniewski in an interview with the National Catholic Register. In his view, the ‘Tradidionis custodes’ of Francis, a paper imposing serious restrictions on the erstwhile liturgy, should simply be withdrawn.

Though theoretically Leon XIV could simply free the erstwhile The Holy Mass does not mention straight to that text, according to Ludniewski, the importance of the substance requires clear action. Leon XIV could issue his own paper in which he would undertake to sum up the last 4 years after the “Traditionis custodes”, stating that, in the face of many difficulties with its implementation, he decides to reconstruct the principles introduced into the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict XVI.

Joseph Shaw, head of the Latin Mass Society of large Britain, believes that Leon could print his own short document, simply restoring the right to make decisions about the erstwhile liturgy to bishops and restoring to all priests the right to celebrate the Mass of the All-Times in any church. As a result, the focus of disputes would be importantly reduced, focusing on the local context and competence of the Bishop of the place.

Finally, in Shaw's view, the pope could bet on a policy of tiny gestures, specified as allowing the Mass of the All-Times to be celebrated in the advanced basilica of St Peter, or giving his blessing to the participants of the traditionalist pilgrimage to Chartres, France.

According to Ludniewski, Leon XIV can strategically focus on the rule of “harmonious pluralism” which St Augustine valued, allowing different liturgical customs to make in different places depending on the different sensitivity and needs of the faithful.

"He could say that unity does not mean uniformity, and so there is no interior problem with the fact that there is more than 1 form of Roman ritual," he pointed out, recalling that there is already a Zairi rit and a rit utilized by converts from Anglicanism.
