NEW YORK- Citi Rewards Visa credit cardholders face upcoming changes as Citibank completes its transition to Mastercard. The bank has begun notifying customers of the final phase-out process.

The Citi PremierMiles Visa has already been scheduled for discontinuation, with replacements issued as Mastercard versions. Citi Rewards Visa will follow soon, impacting cardholders who rely on its bonus earning structure.

Citibank to End Citi Rewards Visa

In 2015, Citibank signed a 10-year agreement with Mastercard, setting the stage for a gradual portfolio migration. Initially, only new card issuances were affected, with existing Visa cardholders still able to use and renew their cards.

By March 2020, flagship products like the Citi Cash Back Card, Citi PremierMiles Card, and Citi Rewards Card had already shifted to Mastercard.

According to Milelion, the final step is now underway. Citi PremierMiles Visa cardholders were notified that their cards will be discontinued on 30 January 2026, with automatic replacement by Mastercard versions.

Any Citi Miles, PayAll transactions, and installment loans will transfer seamlessly upon activation. Failure to activate by the deadline will result in cancellation and forfeiture of associated miles.

Impact on Citi Rewards Visa Cardholders

The Citi Rewards Visa remains active for now, but Citibank has confirmed it will also be discontinued.

The card’s appeal lies in its 4 miles per dollar (mpd) earning rate on online purchases, capped at S$1,000 per month.

Both Visa and Mastercard versions maintain separate bonus caps, allowing dual holders to maximize annual earnings up to 96,000 miles.

Once the Visa version is phased out, this dual cap advantage disappears. Citi Rewards cardholders will instead be transitioned to Mastercard, with balances, installment plans, and ThankYou points transferred automatically.

Customers can also expect added Mastercard-exclusive benefits, such as Priceless Specials and programs like Loyalty Status Match, which offer elite status with hotel and travel partners.

Transition Timeline and Next Steps

Citi has not yet provided a final cut-off date for the Citi Rewards Visa, but the process will likely mirror the PremierMiles Visa timeline. Customers should prepare for the following:

  • If a Citi Rewards Visa holder does not have a Mastercard, a replacement will be issued. Activation will cancel the Visa card.
  • If both Visa and Mastercard versions are held, points will be consolidated under the Mastercard when Visa support ends.
  • All benefits, balances, and loans will continue without disruption after the switch.

Until the official date is announced, cardholders are advised to maximize the dual bonus caps while the Visa remains active.

Bottom Line

Citibank’s decision to fully align with Mastercard marks the end of Citi Rewards Visa and other remaining Visa products.

PremierMiles Visa holders already face a confirmed discontinuation date, and Rewards Visa cardholders will soon follow. While the Mastercard transition ensures continuity of balances and rewards, the loss of dual bonus caps reduces overall earning opportunities.
