The Allied forces attack at Monte Cassino began on 12 May 1944. The soldiers went into a night attack in a mined, almost unprotected area, full of grappling and obstacles, under German fire led from bunkers, artillery stations and mortars, which he was incapable to destruct an hour-long fire of over 1,000 Allied cannons. Only the second attack brought a breakthrough and captured and maintained the hills of “Widmo”, Colle San Angelo (593), “Monte Castellone” and “Massa Albaneta”. On 17 May, at the end of the day, Poles broke the northern edge of the defensive ring. The bunker was captured and German counterattacks were repelled.
Through coordinated actions of all Allied forces at Cassino Germany, fearing the lap, they began retreating in the monastery.
In the morning of 18 May, patrol 12, the Podolski Ulan Regiment under the command of Lieutenant. Kazimierz Gurbiel entered the ruins of the monastery.
