An online vote is underway for the 2023 historical event organized by the Museum of Polish History. There are 15 candidates in 3 categories: “Event”, “Exhibition” and “Education”. In this edition, there were peculiarly many projects related to the past of wars, military and military. Votes may be cast until July 31.

The aim of the plebiscite "Historical Event of the Year" is to popularize the past of Poland by honouring organizers, creators and initiators of the most interesting historical projects of the past year promoting the past and culture of Poland. “By awarding the award, we besides want to encourage others to make their own historical projects and to cultivate memory of Poland’s history,” says Michał Przeperski, a press spokesperson Museum of Polish History, the organizer of the contest.

The Plebiscite consists of 2 stages. In the first, private individuals and institutions study projects related to the widely understood past of Poland, 1 from each of the 3 categories: “Event” (festivals, outdoor events, conferences, symposia, movie screenings, historical reconstructions, performances), “Exhibition” (new permanent or temporary exhibitions, e-shows) and “Education” (garages, lessons, educational games, publications, comic books, applications). “The competition is attended by both well-known Polish institutions, Polish communities and local associations,” the organizers say.

The jury chaired by Prof. Jolanta Choińska-Miki from the University of Warsaw then selects 5 best conviction of the task chapter in each category. The final decision which events will win is made in the second phase of the competition by net users, voting for their favorites among the initiatives qualified by the jury.

This year, the final 15 included many projects related to the widely understood past of military history. Among the most interesting events, the jury chose among others. opening on 13 August 2023 of the fresh office of the Polish Military Museum. After 90 years of operation in the building in Al. Jerozolimskie in Warsaw, the MWP moved its collections to a fresh facility in the Warsaw Citadel. The ceremony attracted presentations and demonstrations of members of reconstruction groups recreating wars, knights and soldiers from the 10th century to the second half of the 20th century.

Also in the category “Event” the beginning of the exhibition “Golgot of the East” in Wrocław starts. The exhibition of the Memorial and Future Centre tells about the repression of exiles in Siberia from the 17th century until the Second planet War, accompanied by films, lessons for students and urban games. Another nominated task is the task “Szyphrodywczyna” of Poznań Heritage Centre. “The aim of the initiative is to popularise cognition about prominent women, precursors in the fields of mathematics, philosophy, information technology, cryptology and intelligence services during planet War II, as well as about precursors of the digital revolution,” says Katarzyna Kucharska, task curator.

On the another hand, in the "Exhibition" category, netizens can vote for the "Road of Heroes" temporary exposition. Its axis is the reconstruction of the historical submarine ORP "Earl", which was part of the set plan film "Earl. Last Patrol" directed by Jack Bławut. The next final exhibition is "Nigra crux mala crux. Black and white legend of the Teutonic Order” organized at the Malbork Castle Museum. It tells about how the past of the memory of the Teutonic Order was shaped among Poles and Germans. It presents about 200 exhibits, including the world's largest painting imagination of the conflict of Grunwald from the Lviv Historical Museum.

Among educational projects, the movie "Wojciech Korfanty – boy of the Silesian Land" was nominated. He presents life Wojciech Korfante, 1 of the fathers of independent Poland, Polish plebiscite commissioner and dictator III Silesian Uprising Inscribed in the context of actions aimed at returning advanced Silesia to the borders of Poland.

The another nominees in the category “Event” are: the beginning of the Cultural Centre “Park of Acts” in Murowana Goślina, set up to make outdoor spectacles telling about the past of Poland, as well as the celebration of the Year of the Ulmów Family, in Podkarpacie, a series of cultural events organized in connection with preparations for beatification of Józef and Victoria Ulmów and their children. Among the nominated exhibitions were the exhibition “A image of the Golden Age” at the Royal Castle in Wawel, presenting a panorama of culture in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian monarchy during the reign of the Jagiellonians, and the exhibition of the Warsaw Museum “Zgruzowstan Warszawy 1945–1949”, presenting the process of post-war de-crudding and rebuilding the capital.

In turn, the finalists in the category “Education” is simply a task “Historical and Social Education” prepared by the University of Silesia and the City of Katowice, whose aim was, among others, to show students differences in the perception of historical and social events between Poles and Ukrainians, a feature game “Jaxa RPG” embedded in the realities of cross expeditions, “We share Łódź” in the Museum of the City of Łódź, i.e. active cognition of the cultural heritage of the metropolis on the occasion of its 600th anniversary, as well as a tour way for children at the permanent exhibition in the Museum of Emigration in Gdynia.
