The Chinese Space discipline and Technology corp (CASC) has revealed strategical directions for the improvement of space acquisition over the period of the 15th five-year plan (2026-2030).

Among the most ambitious initiatives was the peculiar R & D initiative "Tian Gong Kai Wu" (天工开物), which aims to conduct feasibility studies on the acquisition of natural space resources

The project's name refers to the 17th century (this is the Ming dynasty period) of the book Tiangong Kaiwu, an encyclopedia covering a wide scope of method topics specified as the usage of gunpowder. The book was written by Chinese encyclopedist Song Ying Xing. Tiangong Kaiwu is simply a conventional saying that can be translated into Polish as “Things are born from heaven; Craft is the work of man”.

The outline of the task was first presented in 2023 by the student of the Chinese Wang Wei Academy of Sciences, presenting a four-phase plan for the improvement of investigation and resource acquisition of the full solar strategy by a year... 2100.

According to CASC, “Tian Gong Kai Wu” will build comprehensive experimental facilities to research and get space resources along with ground support systems, and a key nonsubjective will be a breakthrough in 4 technologies:

  • research on the resources of tiny blue bodies,
  • intelligent autonomous extraction,
  • cheap transfer transport and
  • processing natural materials in orbit.

What is very crucial in this message: feasibility studies are already being conducted.

The initiative falls within the broader context of the Chinese Space+ strategy, which besides includes the improvement of space tourism, digital infrastructure in orbit and space traffic management systems.

As CAC stressed, not only technology but besides the improvement of an global legal framework governing the extraction of extraterrestrial resources remains a key challenge.
