China threatens Taiwan. Why would Beijing request maneuvers?

On Thursday 23 May, the Chinese Ministry of Defence reported the launch of comprehensive military exercises around the Republic of China. Manoeuvres of the Chinese People's Liberation Army were held in the north, south and east of Taiwan, as well as around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin.
