The United States and China have been waged an exhausting customs war for years, which affects not only their economies but besides global trade. In fresh days, Washington has sent signals of readiness to talk, but Beijing has a condition: “Real honesty” from the United States. What does this mean in practice? And why does China, frequently seen in Poland by the prism of conflicts with the West, this time play a card of diplomatic openness?
Conflict Background: Customs War Forever
Since 2018, the US has imposed increasingly higher tariffs on Chinese goods – initially for Donald Trump's presidency and now continued by the current administration. China responds to symmetrical actions, but at the same time stresses that “The door to talk is open” – provided that the US withdraws unilateral decisions.
Last U.S. move: Washington addressed Beijing with a proposal for negotiations, but without concrete declarations on the abolition of duties.
China's Answer:“If this is simply a fight, we will fight to the end. If talks – we require honesty” said the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
Why don't China give up?
Experts stress that Beijing does not soften its position, but retains “Strategic flexibility”:
Prof. This is Xinquan (University of abroad Trade in Beijing): “China will not quit until the U.S. gives up duties. This is not weakness, it is cold calculation.”
Xing Ziqiang (Morgan Stanley China): “US can lower tariffs in the second half of 2025, but this is simply a game on time. They want to weaken Chinese alliances with another countries."
Pressure on the USA: Customs hit Americans
Contrary to Washington's expectations, a customs war harms America itself:
Decreased consumer confidence (lowest in 5 years) due to costly goods.
Former Treasure Secretary Janet Yellen warns: “Customs destruct American companies, especially those dependent on Chinese natural materials.”
The European Union in the game: Who will benefit from the dispute?
While the US and China are exchanging punches, Europe is looking for an opportunity:
DHL (German logistics giant): “American customs are an chance for the EU to work more closely with China.”
Forecasts: China's trade with the remainder of the planet (outside the US) will grow, especially in the advanced technology sector.
Do negotiations even make sense?
Beijing plays long-term – it does not reject talks, but will not accept empty rhetoric. Meanwhile, the US must choose whether to proceed the costly customs war or find a way to “Real Honesty”which will open the way to compromise.
The image of China as an aggressor in global trade is frequently simplified. In this game, Beijing is not only a U.S. opponent but besides a organization ready for dialog – as long as the partner respects the rule of reciprocity.
