Around 60,000 migrants arrived on Thursday and Friday from Morocco to Spanish Ceuta, reported local authorities. At least 57 people died trying to cross the border. The crisis exposed the system's helplessness and sparked a sharp reaction from Donald Trump's administration.
A frontier that was missing
Ceuta has survived a migration crisis of an unprecedented scale for years. According to [Associated Press](https://apnews.com/article/spain-migration-ceuta-morocco-facts-50baa964ecfb07a2d19223d7ec375b91) about 60,000 people entered the Spanish autonomous city on Thursday and Friday. This is simply a figure corresponding to about 70% of the permanent population of Ceuta.
The balance is tragic. At least 57 migrants died in the water or in close proximity erstwhile trying to cross the border. For each of these numbers is human life. Migration policy, which sends conflicting signals, and smugglers preying on the desperation of people form a deadly mixture.
The Associated Press reports that Moroccan MPs initially did not halt thousands of people heading for the border. Later, Moroccan forces utilized teardrop gas, sticks and water cannons to disperse further groups. Morocco's Ambassador to Spain Karima Benyaich rejected Rabat's work and pointed to the activities of criminal groups.
Vance hits left-wing politics
The crisis was commented by U.S. Vice president J.D. Vance. He wrote on page X that images from Spain show the consequences of mass migration and radically left-wing politics. He added: “Thank God Trump was chosen and our border does not look like that anymore.”
Donald Trump besides charged Spanish authorities with work for mediocre enforcement and besides liberal regulations. The White home uses events in Ceuta as an argument behind hard border control. The very diagnosis of the importance of a fit state is correct. A country that does not control who enters its territory loses the basic attribute of sovereignty.
However, not all claims of the American administration have been confirmed. There is no evidence that the legalization of part of foreigners' stay in Spain without papers straight triggered the massive crossing of the border. The government of Pedro Sánchez argues that smugglers and disinformation distorted the importance of the fresh ultimate Court ruling.
Sentence, rumors and overburdened services
The Spanish ultimate Court concluded that persons detained at sea during an effort to enter Ceuta could not automatically be returned in the mode provided for crossing land border dams. The ruling did not open the border or give the right to reside. According to the Spanish authorities, however, a false message was circulated in Morocco that access to Ceuta would warrant papers and prevent references.
Pressure grew before the mass passage. Data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, quoted by Europa Press, indicated that by 15 July by land 2826 people had reached Ceuta, by 149 percent more than a year earlier. At the end of July, the town had 472 minors with no guardians. The local kid protection strategy was overloaded sixteen times comparative to average capacity.
Most people who crossed the border returned to Morocco voluntarily by Friday evening informed the Spanish authorities. This does not change the basic picture. All it took was rumors, inactivity of services on 1 side, and failure of procedures on the other, so that a tiny city faced an influx of tens of thousands of people.
Lesson for Poland
Poland cannot look at Ceuta as a distant problem of Spain. The state boundary is simply a condition for the safety of citizens and migration should take place legally, on a scale determined by the nation and its authorities. Helping a man in request does not mean agreeing to chaos or giving decisions to smugglers.
The events in Ceuta besides show how rapidly migration force can become an effort at the efficiency of the full country. Clear rules are needed, effective Border Guards, readmission agreements and honest information. For Poles the stake is their own security, the costs of public services and the right of the Republic to find independently who and under what conditions can settle in Poland. This right must not be given to smugglers or officials in Brussels.
