Caritas Poland supports Gaza residents

In mid-April this year, the Catholic Information Agency informed that Archbishop Tadeusz Wojda SAC took the honorary patronage of the Polish Episcopal Conference of the largest assistance program Caritas Poland “Family”.

The task provides support to the most susceptible families in countries affected by armed conflicts and humanitarian disasters, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. During the 9 years of the programme, over 111 million PLN was transferred to the needy.

Caritas Poland has been supporting the people of Gaza for years through Caritas Jerusalem. This cooperation besides covers medical and intellectual assistance activities. Under the household Programme, which has been implemented since 2020, Cartitas Poland has donated over PLN 4 million to supply basic needs, including the financing of meals, medicines, clothes and housing charges. In 2025 we plan to increase the backing of this task to $600,000. Thanks to improvement cooperation of the Ministry of abroad Affairs of Poland, over PLN 18 million has been transferred in fresh years to support people with disabilities. In addition to ad hoc assistance, in 2025 we besides plan to support projects in the improvement of micro-enterprises in the West Bank.

The Caritas Poland delegation, according to KAI, stayed in the West Bank for a week on 7-14 April, where it met its residents. Caritas employees are acquainted with the humanitarian situation in this region and after returning to Poland, they tell how in respective countries in the mediate East, among others, the Caritas Poland programme “Family” is being implemented.

– We had the chance to talk to the people of the Gaza Strip, who live in rubble, live in tents, and may lose their lives all day. Nevertheless, they emphasize that they are grateful for their faith, due to the fact that it gives them strength and aid to believe that the planet has not forgotten them – says Dominika Chylewska, communications manager of Caritas Poland, who spent the last days in Palestine.

Caritas has been helping in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip not only since the Hamas attack of 7 October 2023, but since 2018. However, the situation in both places is different. 50,000 people have died in Gaza so far, more than 100,000 injured.

On the spot, Caritas Poland cooperates with Caritas Jerusalem, which employs 100 local residents, both victims of conflict and those who supply help.

– We have heard that the aid they receive provides opportunities for survival, although it is not decent surviving conditions and does not let them to return to normal. This aid is besides a hope for them that the planet remembers them," said Dominika Chylewska.
