A fewer days before the beginning of the conclave, which will elect a fresh pope, Cardinal Gerhard Müller – erstwhile prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of religion – gave a strong interview to Adam Sosnowski from the White Raven publishing house. Known for its uncompromising approach to religion and doctrine, the German cardinal says directly: the Church can no longer stay silent, and Poland has become a symbol of a fresh kind of clergy persecution.

Spiritual torture in Poland? The Cardinal doesn't beat around the bush

In the interview, Müller referred to the situation of priests in Poland who – as he points out – are treated in a way akin to the times of communism.

"This is simply a violent violation of the law. The treatment of priests as if they were tortured resembles the times erstwhile John Paul II was followed, and Cardinal Wyszyński was sent to exile," said the cardinal.

According to him, these cases are discussed at the highest levels of the Church, and the current situation in Poland echoes widely in the Vatican.

Warning against ideological oppression in Europe

Card. Müller highlighted the deepening crisis of democracy in Europe. He notes that courts, media and state institutions are increasingly active against the rule of justice, and ideology begins to displace the law.

“If anyone thinks otherwise than power, he is ruthlessly pursued. We must fight much harder for the freedom of the Church. We can no longer accept everything," he noted.

New Pope – Not a copy of the predecessor

In the context of the forthcoming conclave, Cardinal Müller stresses that The fresh Bishop of Rome should not be simply a follower of the pontificate of Francis.

"The fresh Pope is to be Peter's successor, not to copy his predecessor. He cannot simply imitate his personality – he is to act according to his own conscience and discernment.”

Criticism of the LGBT Mass: “These are not our symbols!”

His criticism of the actions of any German hierarchs, including cards, besides echoed. Reinhard Marx. Cardinal Müller powerfully condemned the Holy Mass with the LGBT flag in the chancel:

“The LGBT Flag is simply a symbol of an atheistic and anti-Christian worldview. The effort to introduce it to the Church is like flirting with totalitarianism – like swastika or the red flag of communism.”

He noted that The actual signs of the identity of the Church are the cross, the Eucharist, the images of the saints and the past of salvation, not political symbols.

Poland in the spotlight of the Church

The interview with Cardinal Müller clearly shows that Poland is no longer just a “periphery” in the eyes of the Vatican, but an crucial mention point in the fight for spiritual freedom and the sovereignty of the Church.

"An alarm must be struck. If we don’t set boundaries now, it may be besides late.”
