In the parliamentary elections in Canada held on Monday 28 April, the Liberal organization won the most votes. According to Reuters, it is not yet certain that it will be able to make a majority government. If the results are confirmed, it will be the 4th Liberal word in a row – a situation that has not occurred in 114 years.
Mark Carney the Liberal leader and current Prime Minister of Canada, who replaced Justin Trudeau (who resigned from office) in January, is the erstwhile head of central banks of Canada and the United Kingdom. He first competed in parliamentary elections and won in his district. He will be re-opening the Prime Minister's office.
In a conversation with the media, erstwhile U.S. president Joe Biden congratulated Canada on a good choice. "Congratulations to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Liberal organization success in Canada elections. I am convinced that Mark will be a strong leader for the fundamental values and interests that the Canadians and Americans share," wrote Biden.
Elections in the shadow of force from the US. The Canadians showed what they thought of Trump and his "proposals"
According to Reuters, the "wave of patriotism" caused by Donald Trump's threats has contributed to expanding support for the Liberals. The U.S. president called on the Canadians on Sunday 27 April to choose a leader who would have the strength and wisdom to join their country to the United States.
"Choose a man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes by half, increase your military strength, for free, to the highest level in the planet (...), if Canada becomes the valued 51st state of the USA," Trump wrote in his social account.
The threats of joining Canada to the US and Trump's customs policy greatly worsened America's image among Canadians, and the Conservative organization – considered more pro-Russian and dependent on the US – lost more than 20 percent points in the polls.
Canada’s hard relation with the USA
Elections were held in the atmosphere of tense Canadian-American relations. erstwhile Donald Trump took office as president of the United States, he introduced duties on Canadian goods and openly spoke of the request to join Canada in the United States.
The reaction of Justin Trudeau's government was retaliation duties. Mark Carney, who, following Trudeau's resignation, took over the leadership of the Liberal organization and government, continued a tough policy towards the US.
Carney has repeatedly stressed that relations with the confederate neighbour "have suffered a fundamental change", and Canada must search fresh trading partners. As a consequence of these events, Liberals gained importantly in the ratings and yet succeeded in the election, showing that Canadians were not going to comply with Donald Trump's ideas.
