Romania is ready for a serious discussion on unification with Moldova into 1 state. On 14 January, the advisor to the Romanian president Eugene Tomac announced this.
His comments were a consequence to the message made by the president of Moldova Mai Sandu, which stated that if a referendum was held in the Republic of Moldova on unification with Romania, it would vote in favour.
Tomac recalled that Romania officially declared its readiness to talk about unification with Moldova as early as 27 March 2018, adopting an appropriate resolution in parliament without a single vote of opposition. He stressed that this is the authoritative position of the Romanian State and remains unchanged.
"Romania is ready to sit at any time at the negotiating table and seriously discuss this scenario, but only if Moldova considers it an option," noted the Romanian President's advisor.
The August poll showed that the vast majority of Moldovan citizens argue the unification of the country with Romania, while around a 3rd of respondents support this idea. In erstwhile years, the public opinion polls besides indicated that the majority of Romanian residents are opposed to unification with Moldova.
