Barham Salih is simply a Kurdish-origin politician who, after overthrowing Saddam Hussein's government, assumed the function of Deputy Prime Minister of Iraq and later served as Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region. He served as president of Iraq from 2018 to 2020.

The word of office of the advanced Commissioner shall be 5 years. Currently, this is served by Italian diplomat Filippo Grandi, who has held office since January 2016, and whose word of office ends on 31 December 2025.
