British Airways Bans Crew From Drinking Coffee in Public Under New Rules

LONDON- British Airways (BA) has issued strict new appearance and conduct rules for its cabin crew, including a ban on drinking coffee in public. The airline now only permits staff to consume water outside designated areas, and even then, they must do so discreetly.

The policy impacts flight attendants and pilots, many of whom rely on coffee during long schedules. Starbucks runs will no longer be part of the pre-flight routine for British Airways crew departing from London Heathrow (LHR).

British Airways New Rules

The updated guidelines prohibit crew from consuming drinks like coffee, tea, or soda in public spaces. Such beverages may only be consumed in cafeterias or designated rest areas, not while walking in uniform or waiting in passenger areas.

According to PYOK, the rules are part of a broader effort to maintain a professional and consistent image of the airline.

Beyond beverages, the appearance code also dictates grooming standards, including approved shades of nail varnish, lipstick, hairstyles, and eyeglasses.

British Airways has positioned these changes as part of its program to improve the workplace environment, though the restrictions have sparked criticism internally.

Uniform and Grooming Controversies

The uniform, introduced in late 2023 and designed by Savile Row tailor Ozwald Boateng, has been controversial since launch.

A sheer blouse left many staff uncomfortable, with guidance even instructing crew to wear white bras, t-shirts, or avoid lacy and patterned underwear to prevent visibility.

Following backlash from the official cabin crew union, the airline retracted that guidance and promised design modifications, including thicker blouse fabric.

The strict grooming standards highlight ongoing debates in aviation over professional appearance.

While many airlines worldwide have relaxed requirements such as makeup, footwear, and weight checks, British Airways’ new approach marks a reversal toward tighter regulation.

Commuting and Travel Limitations

British Airways also addressed “commuting,” a term in aviation meaning crew fly from one city or country to reach their base.

The airline has barred its staff from wearing uniforms while commuting on British Airways flights, citing long-standing aviation authority regulations.

However, crew from other airlines commuting on British Airways flights remain permitted to wear their uniforms, creating frustration among BA staff.

Social Media Restrictions

In addition to uniform rules, British Airways has tightened its stance on social media. Cabin crew are now prohibited from taking selfies, videos, or any photos in hotel rooms during layovers. This includes destinations such as the Maldives, Cape Town, and Singapore.

The airline warns that even posts shared to private accounts are forbidden, as terrorists or criminals could allegedly use AI to identify hotel locations and target staff.

Earlier bans had already prohibited photos or videos taken while “professionally engaged,” including on board aircraft, during check-in, or walking through airport terminals. Violations may result in disciplinary action or dismissal, highlighting the seriousness of the restrictions.
