Brazilian ultimate Court sentenced erstwhile president Jair Bolsonaro to over 27 years in prison for planning a coup. A 70-year-old politician who held the highest office in the state in 2019-2022 is the first Brazilian president sentenced to prison for attempting to overthrow power after the word expired.
Bolsonaro did not appear personally in court as he has been under home arrest since early August. According to the AP agency, the erstwhile president, who consistently denied all charges, can appeal the sentence.
Charges of coup
Bolsonaro's indictment casts an assassination effort on the democratic strategy and an effort to establish dictatorship after the election defeat in 2022. In the course of the investigation, "a detailed plan for the assassination of the current president Louis Inacio Lula da Silva and another politicians" from his camp was detected.
The plan was to let Bolsonaro to stay in power despite losing in the presidential election. Investigators have demonstrated the existence of concrete preparations to effort a coup in order to prevent the election winner from taking office.
United States reaction
U.S. president Donald Trump called Bolsonaro's conviction "a terrible thing" on Thursday. "I think it's very bad for Brazil" - he added. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on the X portal that the Brazilian court "judged unfairly", adding that "the United States will respond appropriately to this witch hunt".
The ultimate Court of Brazil in early August rejected Trump's earlier interference in defence of Bolsonaro and the another defendants. The U.S. president then called the actions of the Brazilian justice strategy "a witch hunt" and took entry visas to the United States to eleven judges of the Brazilian ultimate Court.
"All those accused in this process of instigators of a coup effort made to prevent the president from taking office by the election winner, Lula da Silva, will be tried against any interference from the outside, regardless of whom they will be taken" - assured president of the Brazilian ultimate Court Luis Roberto Barroso.
