Brazil's Assault on Democracy

On Sunday, supporters of erstwhile Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro tore into government buildings in the country's capital. Current president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called the demonstrators “fascists” who committed “barbaric” acts in Brasília. Both politicians, whose months-long dispute led to clashes in the capital of South America's most populous country, have faced corruption allegations in the past. The images that were recorded match those we were able to see during the attack by Donald Trump supporters on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
