Bożena Ratter: "Imagined by the Historiography of the Ukrainian Cossack Statehood"
date:17 July 2026 Editor: Anna
"Prof. of the East of Europe, Mikhail Hruszewski has been publishing the past of the country since 1898, which he liked to call UKRAINA-RUSIA contrary to history. There's nothing incorrect with that. A historian is allowed not to consider history. So far, the seventh volume devoted to the past of Poland, but is entitled past of Ukraine Rusi – Cossack Times and ends in 1625.(Słowianski planet under ed. Felix Koneczne 1911 No. 77) (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/17q5KTB3jV/)
It is worth knowing how Hruszewski worked in Kiev before he was given a position at the University of Lviv:

"For the first time then the Ukrainians spoke openly as a separate nationality demanding almost autonomy and even independency for their country. On their blue yellow banners there were inscriptions Samostyjna Ukraine with free Russia! - A lonely Ukraine with a hetman at the head! - prof. Hruszewski before the town hall building and in the presence of Russian revolutionary authorities spoke warmly in defence of Ukrainian rights, stressing that "Ukraine joins as a free associate of the union of the Russian national republic" — Maria Dunin Kozicka, witness to the demonstration on 29 March 1917 in Kiev (Burza from the East of 1925).
"Where are the sources of specified an appeasement of the exultation of the Ukrainian people? Its sources date back to the 19th century, erstwhile on a wave of aid to the Galician Russians, building a nation in opposition to Poles and Russians and the Old Russian, Pro-Russian, Polish conservatives ruling Galicia, brought young Ukrainian historian Mikhail Hrushevsky from Kiev to the Polish University in 1894.
This 28-year-old master, appointed for political reasons a professor, began intensive technological work, creating Ukrainian language and publishing, among another things, the monumental work of Istorij U Krajina-Rusy without many detailed, archival and archaeological studies. This was the consequence of work with students-Rusins of Halitian who infected him with the bug of nationalism.
Since these years, pseudo-scientific beautification and mythology of the past of Rusi-Ukraine began. Ukrainian historians began to present the Lithuanian state of the Jagiellonian era as a form of Ukrainian statehood, according to the conventional take of Hruszewski.
Wacław Lipiński/ Wiaczesław Lypynskyj, Ukrainian monarch of Polish origin, questioned the essence and political consequences of the Lublin Union of 1569, erstwhile the lands of later provinces of Kiev, Bracławski, Volynski and Podlasie were incorporated into the crown (remaining at the request of local boyars), and the Perejasławska settlement of 1654, which gave the left-coast Ukraine to the Tsar.
As prof. A. Zięba wrote: “When events cease to be facts and become legends to the historian, specified as “the Lublin Legenda” or “the Perejeslaw Legenda” in Lypynski’s perspective, it happens fabulously lushly flourish under his pen.”
The imaginary Cossack statehood is shown by Ukrainian historiography as an empire and a partner of the leading powers of the planet (it had an equal relation with Sweden, England, imperialism and Papacy!). Similarly, the 18th and 19th centuries are treated erstwhile Poland, Russia and Austria are considered to be a abroad country, and politicians and parliamentarians (regardless of nationality) from alleged Ukrainian lands - as representatives of Ukraine (which did not be as a political entity, or state). These historians do not want to know that from the defeat of Poltava to the peace of Brest Ukraine was not an object, but simply the subject of games by European politicians. (prof. Czesław Partacz)
The ideas and ideas of Hruszewski from 1905-1907 published in St. Petersburg "Osbożden of Rossia and Ukrainian wopros" are worth learning:
The 3rd century already lives these territories taken distant in 1772 outside Poland, and yet they are "maintenances based on the large earthly property of the further historical existence of Poland, the existence of a completely real existence at all, not belonging to the past". A 100 decades of efforts have been made by Russia, the nation and the state to exterminate the Polish thought of the state - to date, unsuccessfully. This condition will proceed as long as the best Polish elements hold in their hands a full lot of earth. Only the removal of Poles from below the feet of this foundation will origin them a decisive blow. Russia should have done so more quickly, otherwise it may be met by a certain beautiful morning of the terrible anticipation of creating a fresh Poland in the above territories – advised Russia Prof. Hruszewski in 1907.
Jarosław Hrycak is simply a typical of the alleged Ukrainian historical school of Lviv. According to representatives of this “school”, east Małopolska during the period II of the Polish Republic was under “Polish occupation”. He besides wrote “Ugrajina's Stories” published in Polish by the Institute of Central east Europe in Lublin. The maps show the revisionist, alleged ethnographic borders of Ukraine in the last 3 centuries - prof. Czesław Partacz. (see J.Hrycak's interview for Our Word, 7.Xi.2004) . An interview for the Policious paper of the Union of Ukrainians, whose current president, Mr. Skin, we are proceeding recently. Is that plagiarism?
Oh, my God.
