date: July 06, 2026 Editor: Anna
PALMIRY. The place of punishment for the people whom the German occupier wanted to remove, due to the fact that they were the spiritual and INTELECTUAL CROSS OF THE NATION. It was there that professors, teachers, artists, socialists - PEOPLE OF THE FINGER AND PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE were placed. People who believed that Poland was more than a boundary on the map. Among them was Witold Hulewicz. On 12 June 1941, he was murdered by Germans in Palmira. He was only 45 years old - Mrs. Małgorzata Łuczak, Ambassador to the Hulewicz Prize in large Britain, during the Witold Hulewicz Awards Gala – 12 June 2026 - presented the character of Witold Hulewicz, programme manager and manager of the Vilnius Radio of Polish Radio, poet, translator, soldier, conspirator, patriot and man who served his country all his life.He was a man profoundly immersed in European culture and at the same time highly profoundly rooted in Polish tradition.

It would be large if the message of the life of a writer and radioman found a mention in the action of our contemporary journalists, people of culture and art, socialists. Today, too, we see a threat, the same forces hostile to us. In view of the reaction of the German police to the entry of representatives of the Border Defence Movement with a cross to commemorate human and material losses as a consequence of German crimes during planet War II, can a position another than a reprehensible 1 be taken?
World War II began in September 1939. Poland was under business and thousands of people faced the most hard choice of their lives. Silence or act. defend yourself or service others. Choose safety or work - Mrs Margaret Archer continues her beautiful communicative of humanity.
Witold Hulewicz had no doubt. He's active in a conspiracy. He collaborated with the Polish underground and acted to preserve the independent thought, culture and spirit of the nation. He knew the risks involved. He knew all day could end with an arrest. He saw life at stake. Still, he didn't back down.
In November 1940 he was arrested by Gestapo and imprisoned in Pawiak. He was interrogated, imprisoned and tortured. This is 1 of those moments in human life where all declarations are verified by reality. You can then effort to save yourself at any cost, you can search compromise. You can renounce the values that have previously been proclaimed publicly.
Witold Hulewicz remained faithful to himself, faithful to Poland and to the values he served his full life. We should see a man standing before a choice in his full life. He could choose comfort many times. He could choose safety, silence and peaceful creative work distant from risk. But all time he chose responsibility, service, and faithfulness to what he thought was the most important. He chose Poland not only erstwhile it could be spoken of with pride during the ceremony, but besides erstwhile this love meant danger, suffering and the highest price.
