Boeing Unveils New F/A-XX 6th-Gen Fighter Jet Rendering

WASHINGTON- Boeing has released a new rendering of its proposed F/A-XX sixth-generation naval fighter, showcasing a design partially obscured by clouds over a carrier deck.

Reported by Aviation Week, the rendering shows a highly obscured design, keeping many structural elements hidden while hinting at features that align with next-generation fighter concepts.

The visible elements resemble Boeing’s F-47 Air Force fighter, though both aircraft stem from separate Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) programs with distinct roles.

Boeing’s F/A-XX Concept Design

Boeing’s rendering conceals canards, tail surfaces, and wing tips, but reveals a bubble-shaped cockpit canopy similar to the F-47.

The radome appears narrower, and no vertical stabilizers show, aligning with prior concepts that eliminate them for stealth.

The wingtips and canard placements are concealed, making it difficult to confirm final aerodynamic features.

This suggests a shared design philosophy between the F/A-XX and F-47, despite Boeing’s claim of low parts commonality. The approach prioritizes unified aesthetics over cost-saving shared components.

The rendering suggests stealth as a core requirement, consistent with naval combat demands for survivability in contested environments.

Strategic Purpose Within NGAD

The Navy’s NGAD program is centered on building a “family of systems” to secure future air dominance.

The F/A-XX forms the core of the Navy’s NGAD systems, replacing the F/A-18 Super Hornet and supporting the Lockheed Martin F-35C.

Naval fighters must incorporate reinforced airframes, carrier-launch systems, and folding wings, requirements that distinguish them from Air Force platforms.

Pentagon concerns highlight industry limits in handling dual sixth-gen programs, allocating over $3 billion for the F-47 in FY 2026 versus $76 million for F/A-XX.

This disparity reflects both prioritization of the F-47 and skepticism about whether industry can support dual sixth-generation aircraft programs simultaneously.

Industry Competition and Investments

Boeing faces direct competition from Northrop Grumman, which released its own F/A-XX rendering in August.

Northrop Grumman’s August rendering features a stealth-focused design with a broad nose, single-pilot space, large belly, and no canards.

Both companies seek to demonstrate distinct capabilities, but the Navy has yet to issue a formal production contract.

Despite uncertainty, Boeing has invested heavily in preparing for the future.

The company committed approximately $2 billion to expand its St. Louis combat aircraft assembly facility, signaling long-term confidence in delivering both Air Force and Navy sixth-generation fighters in parallel.

Challenges Ahead for the Program

The F/A-XX remains in its preliminary stages. Without a contract award, the Navy cannot commit to Boeing or Northrop Grumman, leaving the program in limbo.

Pentagon officials remain cautious, the F/A-XX remains on hold, prioritizing the Air Force’s F-47 as the first sixth-gen fighter.

The F-47, as the world’s first sixth-generation fighter, already poses massive technological and financial hurdles. Funding two simultaneous projects would require a major shift in defense spending and industrial planning.

For now, the Navy continues to rely on its fleet of F/A-18 Super Hornets, which are undergoing service life extensions to remain operational until a replacement is secured.

The introduction of the F/A-XX, if approved, would represent a generational leap in carrier-based aviation, but its timeline depends on political, budgetary, and industrial outcomes yet to be resolved.

Current and Future US Fighter Fleet

  • Fifth Generation Fighters:
    • Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor
    • Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (Variants: F-35A, F-35B, F-35C)
  • Sixth Generation Fighters (In Development):
    • Boeing F-47 (US Air Force NGAD)
    • F/A-XX (Boeing or Northrop Grumman, US Navy NGAD)

Until progress is made, the US Navy must extend its reliance on legacy aircraft while waiting for the next-generation design to transition from rendering to reality.

Boeing’s F-47 targets Air Force needs, while the F/A-XX addresses Navy operations. Both advance NGAD goals, but low commonality reflects specialized missions. Northrop Grumman or Boeing will secure the F/A-XX contract, shaping future naval aviation.
