On Friday, an event took place in Warsaw, which shook the Polish political scene. erstwhile Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro was detained by police as he left the tv Republic headquarters. The decision to arrest the PiS policy was made at a gathering of the Pegasus Investigative Committee, which voted on a request for 30-day detention for the erstwhile head of the Justice Ministry. The substance is very emotional and controversial.
Why did the committee make that decision?
The Pegasus Investigative Commission began its gathering at 10:30. Zbigniew Ziobro arrived at the scene around 11:00 p.m., after the committee passed the motion for detention. This decision was met with harsh criticism from Ziobra supporters, but the current Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar, stood up for her.
– It is always the work of the members of the committee which they make the decision," said Bodnar on the air of Programme III of Polish Radio. The lawyer General pointed out that he did not want to "substitute their decisions in any way", but besides pointed to Ziobra's actions which were intended to impede the work of the committee.
– We request to realise how the full communicative was arranged by Zbigniew Ziobro, as in many different ways he tried to avoid standing before the committee earlier," Bodnar added.
Ziobro was avoiding appearances?
Adam Bodnar stressed that even the day of the proceeding was specially prepared by Ziobra to impede the committee's work. "Even this day, this Friday was prepared by him in specified a way as to make it hard for the committee to act and the committee has absolutely the right to make specified a decision at 10:30 a.m., not another decision," said the head of the ministry of justice.
Hołównia: “This show will continue”
The decision of the committee was besides commented on by the talker of the Sejm, Simon Holovnia. In an interview with journalists before leaving for Estonia, he admitted that the procedure related to Ziebra's arrest could take weeks or even months.
– Regarding the request for 30 days of detention for Mr. Ziobro, the procedure will take weeks if not months," the Holovnia said. “Now the committee has to conclude with the lawyer General, the lawyer General has to send the papers to me, I gotta send the papers of the committee, the committee has to study to the Sejm, the Sejm has to make a decision and then I am sending the papers to the lawyer General again,” explained the marshal.
The Holovnia besides expressed the opinion that the committee should wait for Ziobra alternatively of taking specified extremist steps. "I think the committee should wait, that these 10 minutes of difference would not have made here," he said.
What's next with Ziobra?
The case of Zbigniew Ziobry inactive raises many questions. Did the Pegasus investigation committee do the right thing by deciding to arrest the erstwhile minister? Did Ziobro truly effort to avoid standing up to the committee? These questions will be answered by weeks or even months during which the procedure will develop.
One thing is certain – the decision of the committee will affect not only the further conduct of the investigation, but besides the Polish political scene, which is already divided in the assessment of this event.
