date:04 October 2024 Editor: Anna

The October 1984 events shook Poland. The abduction and death of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko left deep traces in our history. On the occasion of the upcoming 40th anniversary of these tragic events, we present the latest book by Jolanta Sosnowska "The Martyr for religion and Solidarity. Biography illustrated by Blessed Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko".
The author of over 50 photographs in the book Martyr for religion and Solidarity is Adam Bujak.

Below is an interview with Adam Bujak,

The abduction and start of the search of Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko in October 1984 shocked the public, even people who had not previously known Kapelan Solidarity and had not heard of it. How do you callback that dramatic time?
Adam Bujak: It seemed incredible to us. The body of Fr. Popiełuszko was recovered at the dam in Włocławek, where I later drove many times. I photographed this area by capturing incredible lights, knowing that I was in the place of the martyrdom of a holy man. I think that the biography by Mrs Jolanta Sosnowska, in which my photographs are located, brings the character of priest Popiełuszko, on which we can model in various activities today.
Especially many photos were taken at the ceremony of Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko...
It was a immense gathering in Żoliborz, which gathered – as it is estimated – even a million people, including the full opposition. People from all over Poland arrived, although it was not easy to travel. It was a dreary communist time, a time of hatred, contempt for good, and after all priest Popieluszko was a model of good, love, reconciliation and goodness. He brought people together with his goodness. This ceremony was 1 large cry, a collective regret. That I managed to get there with that million people, over the grave itself, it was a miracle... I inactive have the first clumps of land in my eyes, which were increasingly filling the cross on the coffin. I looked at the inside of the grave and at the faces of Fr Jerzy's grandmother, inactive alive, grandfather, parent and father, brothers and sisters of Fr Jerzy. It was something very sad that you can't forget. besides this funeral, as well as the full substance of the abduction of Fr Jerzy, was perfectly described by Jolanta Sosnowska in her biography "The Martyr for religion and Solidarity", which I boldly urge to readers to remember or learn the life of a wonderful, holy man, Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko.
Later you besides visited Fr Jerzy's household sites, you met the places where you grew up and the atmosphere where you grew up.
I photographed these places and Father George's mother, made her many portraits. In the book we are talking about, there is simply a photograph showing the depth of her suffering. She suffered due to the fact that she couldn't realize why her boy was murdered.
Two and a half years after the martyr's death of Fr Jerzy Popiełuszko, Pope John Paul II leaned over his grave. This was a thrilling historical event, which you besides documented in your photographs.
Two large men with a holy dimension met; 1 dead, and the other, inactive radiating with force John Paul II. It was an event full of emotion for him, due to the fact that he had prayed for Fr George many times before and talked about him, and on this June 1987 he stood at his grave, kneeled and leaned over his stone lump, paying homage to martyrdom, but besides to Kapelan Solidarity's full life.
The book “The Martyr for religion and Solidarity” besides contains a series of your photographs from the Warsaw beatification of Fr Jerzy, which came to a tragic time just after the Smolensk disaster.
After the celebrations in Piłsudski Square, I went with my boy Marcin, due to the fact that we photographed this beatification together, on Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat. I stood there on a makeshift elevation and looked at a immense crowd that was walking, walking and walking all the way to the Temple of Divine Providence, inactive unfinished at the time. It was an extraordinary contrast that in this Warsaw – which is now voting for people who are unworthy, as if they hatred good – the Good of Father Popieluszko walked with specified a immense crowd of believers. People walked with love, with songs, portraits and beautiful banners. A great, moving and memorable event, showing how the Polish nation is attached to the Church, including this large figure, which is blessed priest Jerzy Popieluszko. But I think we can talk holy, for there is no uncertainty that he will be canonized.
Which of the pictures contained in the book Martyr for religion and Solidarity are closest to you?
Each of them, but I would peculiarly draw attention to specified a reflective photograph of Father George's parent from the beatification in 2010. She was aware of the tragedy of the situation, the tragedy of the system, and the bad people who killed her son, but present we are surrounded by bad people from a grim left hand, which is so illustrated by fighting the Church, fighting the Cross. There is simply a fight against goodness, there is simply a fight against St John Paul II, with Fr Popieluszko – and why? Then, during the beatification, the large love of the people, who came in immense thousands, appeared to show the attachment to the values to which Fr Jerzy sacrificed his life and for which he suffered martyrdom.
