1st Bombers Regiment is the first unit of engineering troops to usage drones. From February, bomb squads from Brzeg will test unmanned Polish manufacturers who cooperate with the defence department. Plans presume that the regiment is to be equipped with air, land and water drones. The unit already operates the Engineering Unmanned Platform Laboratory.
The commanders stress that the introduction of drones into the engineering army is simply a necessity and a request for a modern battlefield. “The war in Ukraine has shown that unmanned air, land and water systems become crucial. This besides applies to bomb squads. Classical reconnaissance, which involves the presence of soldiers in the danger zone, can lead to large losses and engineering troops may be under constant enemy observation. That is why we should bet on the usage of unmanned workers – explains Colonel Krzysztof Jarozek, commander 1st Bomb Squad.
For distant designation and mincing
Unmanned land vehicles developed by the Industrial Institute of Automatics and Measurements (PIAP), which is 1 of the leading unmanned improvement centers for military usage in the country, were presented in the Brest unit in mid-January. In February Bombers from the Bank will test this equipment – both land-based, used, among others, to replace and mine the site, as well as water and air. Tests will pass, among others, unmanned PIAP huntsman and PIAP Ibis. – We will check radio and wireless control, interference opposition and unmanned operation in the field. We besides want to know how long it will work without overcharge and whether it meets the parameters indicated by the manufacturer. If he's gonna set up anti-tank mines, we'll see if he does. We will test how it will behave on various substrates, on driveways under a hill, in a sandy or wet area – Colonel Jaroszek mentions.
The commander adds that in addition to flying and driving drones, the ones that operate underwater are besides of large importance. Let's presume that we have an assignment. build a pontoon bridge. specified an unmanned man could check the bottom of a river or another reservoir, detect threats, including water obstacles, but besides mines," the officer explains.
Bombers will besides test the equipment utilized to mine distant or overhead, thus spreading a large number of mines in a given area without digging them into the ground. Unmanned land vehicles, specified as the Polish ivy, automatically forming anti-tank dams utilizing mine throwers, service this purpose. The ivy developed by the consortium, the leader of which is Stekop S.A., can be controlled by both the crew in the vehicle, the operator at a safe distance, but can besides operate full autonomously, moving on routes thanks to GPS. The strategy allows to launch up to 100 MN-123 anti-tank mines at 1 time.
In early February the Ivy will be presented to soldiers of the Brest Regiment. They are to be tested in the future, as are PIAP systems. The plans besides include investigating equipment from the Bydgoszcz Electromechanical Plant Belma S.A. There's more producers coming in all the time. The procedure is that they first gain approval from the Ministry of Defence, only after the formalities have been completed we start testing. Everything ends with our opinion for Inspectorate of Unmanned Armed Forces. We point to the disadvantages and advantages of the equipment, and the Inspectorate decides whether to acquisition – explains Colonel Jaroszek. How many drones and what bomb squads from the Bank will receive, the commander has not yet revealed.
Unmanned laboratory
An component of the drone revolution in the Brest Regiment is the launch of the Engineering laboratory of Unmanned Platforms. It will employment 30 people with IT, method and engineering education. They are designed to repair drones, tests, but besides to construct simple unmanned vehicles. The lab's just starting. In the future, we want to usage 3D printers to produce basic flying unmanned vehicles. We're putting together a squad for now. We focus on people with the right competences and experience in working with civilian drones. The squad will undergo further training to carry out the tasks facing the laboratory," explains the commander of the 1st Bomb Squad. Currently, any soldiers from the unit are trained to operate PIAP drones, which will be tested any day now.
A drone revolution in the army
Last September it entered into force Act on circumstantial rules for preparing and implementing strategical investments in relation to the needs of state defence or public security. It allows the acquisition of unmanned systems without a tendering procedure – if they pass the tests in the Polish Army first and will be given a affirmative opinion by the army. All to make it easier and faster to buy drones.
The Polish army is to be equipped – as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz – in hundreds of thousands of unmanned.
