44 of our people died in Afghanistan. Today, many would say that for nothing, although at the time of deciding to participate in the mission, the votes of opposition were marginal. At the time Poles felt authentic satisfaction that they could be part of something bigger – the West understood not as a slogan, but as a community of responsibility. There was a real joy in being “on the right side of history” of participating in an alliance that does not end with declarations. This experience – a sense of community of destiny – is present challenged by Trump's words. And it hurts the most due to the fact that it takes the meaning not only of political decisions from years ago, but besides of emotions that accompanied the full generation of Poles entering the West with hope, pride and feeling that we are yet together.
