Today, the military began regular patrols on the streets of the capital of the 2 largest cities of Belgium – Brussels and Antwerp. The reason, as stated in the Brussels Times portal, is concerns about safety in places frequently visited by the judaic community, including synagogues and schools.

The military patrolled the streets of Belgian cities for respective years after the terrorist attacks occurred in Brussels in 2016. 32 people and 3 suicide bombers were killed in the attacks, and over 300 people were injured.

The defence minister Theo Francken announced that as of present 200 soldiers would patrol places frequently visited by the judaic community, in peculiar the synagogues and schools.

The military will initially be deployed in Brussels and Antwerp and then – in Liege, for a period of 3 months. After 3 months, the contingent is to be reduced to 90 soldiers.
