March 12, 1999. Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary became the first erstwhile east Bloc countries to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On that day in Independence, Missouri, abroad Minister Bronislaw Geremek handed US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright the paper of ratification of the Washington Treaty. The accession crowned nearly a decade of efforts.
