French abroad Minister Jean-Noel Barrot present stated that the Heads of Diplomacy of the G7 States would discuss during a two-day gathering under Paris the anticipation of financing the repair of the Chernobyl atomic power plant sarcophagus, which was damaged by the Russian attack. The cost of work is estimated at EUR 500 million.
“The G7 must play a key function in collecting funds for this intent in close cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development,” Barrot told journalists in the G7 meeting’s spheres, referring to the corrective work to be done on a steel shield built in 2019, covering the reactor destroyed as a consequence of a 40-year-old disaster.
The global Atomic Energy Agency notified in December that a steel inspection of the structure showed that harm to the shell was caused by a drone impact in February 2025. It was then assessed that, despite the corrective work, "a comprehensive renovation is essential to prevent further deterioration and to guarantee long-term atomic safety".
According to the Ukrainian authorities, a Russian drone with a warhead struck the power plant, causing fire and harm to the protective shell over reactor 4. Russia denied attacking the power plant.
