Many people in Poland do not realize that in their drawers there can be papers that cover value exceeding respective 1000 zlotys. Turns out pre-payment papers for cars from the times of the Polish People's Republic are inactive up to date, and those who placed orders for the Fiats in the 1980s can now recover a large amount of money. The article presents details of this procedure, how to exercise the right to compensation and what is worth knowing about the past of prepayments.
Ministry of Finance increases compensation for prepayments on Fiat
Under fresh regulations, Ministry of Finance updated the level of compensation for unused prepayments for cars to be delivered from 1982 to 1985. Amounts of compensation for persons who have placed an order for Fiat 126p and FSO 1500, can scope even 27,479 PLN for prepayment to Fiat 126p, and 19 391 zł for those who waited for FSO 1500. These amounts include not only the first payment but besides the interest and compensation.
Who can claim money?
The eligible compensation is above 300 000 people, which paid in advance to buy cars in the times of PRL. Importantly, the right to pay these funds is besides granted heirs people who died and their prepaid books were retained. It is worth adding that no deadline to submit applications, so those who hold the applicable papers may search to pay these funds at any time.
How do I get my money back?
Recovery of prepaid money is comparatively simple. Just go to any PKO BP facility au ID and the first prepayment book. All that is needed is for the bank to pay both the first amount of the deposit and interest and compensation. If the holder of the book has died, the heirs may besides submit to the bank with appropriate papers confirming the right to receive the funds.
History of prepayments for PRL cars
The pre-payment strategy for cars in Poland operated in years 1982-1985. At that time, future owners had to first deposit the full amount or part of the amount for the car before the car was produced. Despite delays in production and delivery, many people have never received ordered vehicles. As a result, around 342,000 people did not get their cars, and the Polish State decided to pay them compensation for unused prepayments.
Compensation – current rates
According to the decision of the Ministry of Finance, the current compensation rates will apply to March 31, 2025. It is worth knowing that compensation amounts are updated quarterly and announced by the Ministry of Finance. This means that those who neglect to submit applications before the end of March can number on further changes in compensation in future quarters.
What papers are needed to recover the money?
In order to apply for reimbursement of prepayments, the following papers must be kept:
- Original prepayment book for a car,
- ID the applicant,
- In case of heirs – appropriate documents confirming the right to inheritance.
All papers may be submitted in individual to PKO BP facilities which are authorised to pay compensation. Importantly, this process is free of charge and the bank pays out at current rates.
When's the last chance to pay the compensation?
Although no deadline has been set, those who decide to apply for money should remember that compensation rates vary all quarter. March 31, 2025 is the final date until which the current amounts of compensation will apply. This means that late people can receive lower amounts depending on the update in future years.
Why is it worth getting that money back?
Few Poles realize that prepayments from the 1980s could be worth even a fewer tens of 1000 zlotys. Although the procedure for recovering money is simple, only a fraction of those who can apply for it submits applications.
