Bank Sparkasse Hannover based in Hannover blocked the account of erstwhile German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder a year ago to receive transfers from operator Nord Stream 2, Nord Stream 2 AG “ Bild writes, citing his own investigation and sources.
"Sparkasse Hannover blocked Schröder's account for any transfers," writes the publication. The publication claims that it concerns Nord Stream 2's cash transfers, which are related to its activities as president of the board.
Bild writes that in a letter to Schröder, Sparkasse Hannover's management expressed concern that the bank could be subject to US sanctions if it continued to transfer funds to Schröder's account. The publication notes that the reason for the blockade is not apparent due to the fact that Schröder is not on any sanction list.
According to the tabloid newspaper, it is worth noting that the blockade took place in June 2024 – only a fewer weeks after the inauguration of the fresh mayor of the town from the Green Party, Belita Onai. She had previously expressed criticism of Schröder and demanded that he be stripped of the title of honorary resident of Hanover.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Schröder has been constantly attacked due to his relation with Russia and his relationship with the Russian President. However, attempts to expel him from the Social Democratic organization (SPD), whose associate is besides present Chancellor Olaf Scholz, failed.
"Nord Stream 2" is simply a gas pipeline exported from Russia to Europe through the Baltic Sea, with a capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year in 2 strands. The construction of the gas pipeline was completed in September 2021, but it was never put into service. A year later – in September 2022 – 1 of the Nord Stream 2 threads and both strands of the parallel Nord Stream export pipeline were destroyed by the explosion. Ukraine is liable for sabotage.
The Russian Public Prosecutor's Office initiated proceedings on an act of global terrorism. Russia repeatedly requested data on the Nord Stream explosion, but never received it.
