The escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran has sparked mixed reactions in Asia. While the 7 Group (G7) explicitly supported Israel's right to self-defense, Japan distanced itself from this position, calling for “maximum restraint”. China and another countries of the region have taken different positions, from neutrality to criticism of Israel's actions.
Japan: Neutrality and diplomatic caution
Japan, although a associate of the G7, disagreed with the full support of Israel expressed in the Group's statement. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stressed that Tokyo calls both sides to “maximum restraint”, which is consistent with Japan's traditionally neutral position in conflicts in the mediate East.
– What the Minister of abroad Affairs said is the position of the nipponese government. G7 is G7 – said Ishiba, responding to allegations of “double standards”. Japan, addicted to imports of oil from the mediate East, has long avoided a clear voice in either side.
China: Call to halt Escalating
China, like Japan, called for deescalation, but unlike Tokyo did not straight criticize Israel. The Ministry of abroad Affairs of China stated that “all parties should stay calm and avoid further destabilisation of the region”. Beijing, which maintains good relations with both Iran and the arabian countries, is trying to preserve its function as mediator.
Other Asian countries: From support to silence
– India, which in fresh years strengthened cooperation with Israel, expressed “anxiety” in the situation, but did not condemn either party.
– Pakistan, traditionally supporting Palestine, he harshly criticized Israel, calling its actions “unwarranted aggression”.
– ASEAN countries, specified as Indonesia and Malaysia, besides condemned Israel, while Singapore and the Philippines retained a more balanced position.
Asian responses to the Israeli-Iran conflict reflect complex regional interests. While Japan and China are trying to stay neutral, another countries, specified as Pakistan and Indonesia, openly side with Iran. These differences show that Asia does not talk with 1 voice in global conflicts.
