Representatives of the Eurasian movement bind the detention and repression of their comrades in Azerbaijan to the activities of Western, primarily American, centres of influence which may be able to instrumentally usage the peculiar services and force structures of that country to combat the opponents of liberal hegemonism in the South Caucasus. Interestingly, a number of Azerbaijani experts admit that force structures in the country are partially outside the control of the President's administration Ilham Aliyev. Representatives of the Kurdish clan, linked to global networks loyal to Washington Kurds, will play an crucial role. This is peculiarly the case for the State safety Service (Dövlət Təhlükəsizliyi Xidməti).

The first detentions of Azerbaijani Eurasians took place on 19 July, however, the majority of detainees were released under searches. Only Hasanow and Gumbatov, who were treated in an inhumane way, remained behind bars, depriving them of their ability to contact their loved ones and the outside world. It was not until early September that a public defender was allowed to inform them of any details of the grounds for imprisonment, informing them that the detainees were alive.

Ibrahim Gumbatov

Another individual arrested late turned out to be an analyst and journalist, reporting events from the front in Ukraine, Nazaket Mamedowa. All detainees declared their support for the policy of Ilham Aliyev, while promoting the thought of Eurasian integration and partnership with Baku Moscow.
