This decision ends the period of exemption from fees that has been in force since 2023. way operator, Gdańsk Transport Company (GTC), stated that the tolls would stay the same as before the tolls were abolished.
Rates for crossing the A1 motorway in 2025
Charges for utilizing the A1 motorway will depend on the vehicle category:
- Passenger cars and motorcycles (categories 1 and 1A): 0.16 PLN net per kilometer.
- Vehicles with double wheels or more (categories 2, 3 and 4): PLN 0.38 net per kilometer.
- Non-normative vehicles (category 5): The fee is 10 times the rate for category 1, or 1.60 PLN net per kilometer.
For passenger vehicles and motorcycles the full cost of crossing the Gdańsk-Torun way will be around 16.48 PLN gross (at a distance of 152 km).
Two options for toll payment
Drivers have 2 methods of regulating fees:
- Traditional goal system:
- Picking up a ticket at the road entrance.
- Payment of the fee on departure on the gate operated by the collector.
- AmberGO system:
- For registered users of AmberGO strategy fees are charged automatically.
- This solution eliminates the request to halt on the goals, which importantly reduces the time of crossing.
AmberGO operates on the basis of the vehicle recognition by cameras based on the registration number. The strategy is especially recommended for people who frequently usage the A1 motorway.
Why is the free ride over?
The exemption from charges between 2023 and 2024 was part of a government strategy to reduce transport costs during a hard inflation period. As of 2025, the restoration of tolls is to aid finance the maintenance and modernisation of the highway, including surface repairs and the construction of fresh passenger service points (MOPs).
Planned investments on way A1
With the return of the tolls, the road operator announced the continuation of the modernisation work on the A1 route. The plans for 2025 include:
- Construction of modern passenger service points equipped with electrical car charging stations.
- Additional lanes in the most laden sections, specified as the Gdańsk Node South and Toruń South.
- The introduction of a dynamic traffic management strategy to improve the smoothness of driving during highest hours.
Impact on drivers and transport
Restoration of tolls may affect the driver's choice of route. any may choose to travel on national roads to avoid additional costs. However, experts point out that journey time by alternate routes is much longer, which can be burdensome, especially for people travelling for longer distances.
Dr. Tomasz Zawada, road transport expert, comments:
"A1 motorway is simply a key link between north and south of Poland. Restoration of fees is not surprising, but it is worth noting that the investments announced by the operator can improve the quality of travel, which partially compensates for these costs."
