Autonomous weapons systems (autonomic waapon systems) – AWS) became part of our reality. These are the fastest developed tools of modern conflicts that can undermine the principles of civilian work and protection. In November 2025, the UN General Assembly voted one more time on Resolution L.41 on AWS (156 votes in favour, 5 against, 8 abstentions). I would add that Poland has been among the second for a long time.
Poland lies at the border of a region with increased hazard of conflict. Any military innovation that speeds up decisions to usage force or blurs human work can hit the safety of our citizens and infrastructure. In this sense, participation in the global debate on AWS is not an abstract discussion, but a protection of our Polish interests. If there are no rules, it is the front states, specified as Poland, that will first be exposed to the consequences of deficiency of clear restrictions. This is best reflected by the words of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski of his speech to the UN in September 2025. He talked about the most destructive arms race in history, driven by AI and drones. He besides called for global regulations on their use. He pointed out that stopping this war now and with it the global arms race would be cheaper than building underground kindergartens or immense bunkers for critical infrastructure in the future.
What you can see from Geneva
In the work of the Group of Government Experts on Death Autonomous Arms Systems (GGE on LAWS), it matures the belief that the prepared rolling text (the working version of the resolution) could become a real starting point for the negotiation of a fresh binding legal instrument. It's a good time to usage that impulse.
If we don't do this, let's prepare to escalate conflicts on a scale we've never seen before. But can you prepare for that...
