Artificial Intelligence: The race for primacy continues

The Center for safety and fresh Technologies at Stanford University presented data on the number of patents related to artificial intelligence (AI) granted between 2012 and 2022 (the patent process lasts about 2 years, so the advanced limit date is 2022).

Data collected and compiled by the Centre show that China has for the first time in past overtook the United States in terms of the number of patents on AI solutions in 2013. Since then, the mediate State has noted a immense increase in confirmed AI patent applications. In 2022 China received more patents in this respect than all another countries combined.

High activity in artificial intelligence investigation does not mean that China is the leader in its application. This is due to the fact that in the United States, which are indisputably number 1 in the applications of AI-based solutions, large companies like IBM, Microsoft and Google are mainly asking for patent solutions. Meanwhile, in China patent applications linked to artificial intelligence are submitted by government agencies (air, space, etc.), universities and technology companies (e.g. Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba).

The subject of Chinese AI patents are mostly solutions for input data analysis, including in peculiar interpretations of visual data (image recognition).

American AI patents are spread more evenly in different fields of investigation on this technology.
