Postmodern democracies are rooted in the cosmopolitanism of urban life. And this is sometimes marked by intolerance and conditioned by the temper of the crowd. In a crowd, a lie or a half-truth can ricochet indefinitely before the fact is full revealed - and then it is frequently besides late to repair reputations and undo consequences.
