Apple was fined USD 570 million (EUR 500 million) by the European Union for monopoly practices at the App Store. But this is not the end of the case.
The company found the decision unfair and announced an appeal.
The EU accuses Apple of restricting competition by:
- forcing the sale of applications exclusively by App Store, with a commission of 15-30%,
- prohibit the return of users to external sites (e.g. subscriptions),
- there is no anticipation to sale apps outside the App Store.
Although Apple has made any changes (e.g. Core Technology Fee charge for alternate stores), fresh rules may inactive make life hard for independent application developers.
Apple's position:
The European Commission is unfairly attacking Apple, which harms the privacy, safety and quality of our products.
– said the company in a statement. Apple added that it intends to fight for the rights of its users and appeal the judgment.
The White home spokesperson powerfully criticized the sanctions against Apple and Meta, specifying them as "economic blackmail that will not be tolerated by the US".
The squad of the Connected podcast commented on the matter. in the last episodeWhich I highly urge to you!
