EC call – threatened existence of independent social organisations in Hungary

More than 320 civilian society organisations, including the Schuman Foundation, called on the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to act immediately on the Hungarian draft law on the transparency of public life.

This project, supported by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, provides for the creation of an Office for the Protection of Sovereignty to identify organisations benefiting from abroad backing as a threat to Hungary's sovereignty. The law would impose restrictions on specified organisations, including a ban on the usage of a national donation strategy and additional burden on donors. Signatories of the open letter stress that the bill violates European Union law, including the principles of free movement of capital and the right to freedom of expression and association.

Organisations call on the European Commission to mention the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union and to take temporary measures to block the implementation of the Act.
