The Buriats appeared in 1240 and we owe it to the Mongols. Initially, they were nomadic, with time they focused on breeding horses, cattle, and sheep. In the 17th century, they encountered Russians who began the colonization of Siberia. The Buriat tribes then merged and became the dominant element, economically and militarily. The Buryat religion is simply a variety of Tibetan Buddhism – Lamaism, professed in Mongolia, Tuva, and Kalmutia.

In the early 13th century, the peoples surviving around Bajkal were absorbed for 2 centuries by the large Mongolian Empire. Since the 18th century, the formation of a Mongolian-speaking Buriat people has been noted. To defend the border of the Russian Empire and China in the mid-19th century, the Zabaykal Cossack Army was formed, and 1 of the six troops was the Buriat Regiment.
