Andrzej Wnuk, associated with Law and Justice (PiS), erstwhile president of Zamość, was convicted by the court for making false statements and fabricating evidence against opposition councillor Mark Kudela. Despite his sentence, Wnuk received a new, intrepid position as manager of the Independent Public Provincial Psychiatric infirmary in Radecznica. His appointment was decided by the Management Board of Lublin Voivodeship, in which Jarosław Stawiarski from PiS is the marshal.
New function despite the controversial past
Andrzej Wnuk, despite losing local elections in April 2023, did not vanish from the political stage. The appointment as manager of the infirmary in Radecznica was possible thanks to the erstwhile transfer of Tomasz Berbć, the erstwhile manager of the facility, to the position of manager of the neuropsychiatric infirmary in Lublin. Significantly, Wnuk took a fresh position without having to participate in the competition, which sparked controversy and suspicion of nepotism and protectionism in the PiS structures.
Judicial judgement and its consequences
The conviction of Andrzej Wnuk came before the territory Court in Kielce on July 25, 2023. The court found him guilty of false evidence and of fabricating evidence against Mark Kudela. He was sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment in suspension for 3 years, a fine of PLN 25 1000 was imposed and the legal costs of PLN 11 1000 were charged. This judgement is not yet final, and Grandson announced an appeal, explaining that he felt innocent.
Background to the conflict with Marek Kudela
Grandson's problems began in 2016, erstwhile as president of Zamość he messed with Marek Kudela, then a councillor for the Civic Platform and a teacher and socialist. Kudela, known for his activity to the local community, began to look closely at the actions of the grandson. At the time, Kudela, like another councillors, criticized Wnuka for nepotism and unprofitableness, accusing him of hiring friends in crucial positions in town hall and city companies.
The video that became evidence
The conflict between the Grandson and Kudela escalated erstwhile president Zamość accused the councilman of illegally surviving outside Zamość, which could consequence in the failure of his mandate. As part of an effort to prove his point, the grandson organized a recording of Kudela's house, which was to confirm his accusations. However, the court found that the recording was fabricated and the evidence presented by the Grandson was unbelievable.
Effects on the Grandson
As a consequence of Kudela's trial, he was acquitted and the case turned against the Grandson. The court showed that the grandson not only made false statements, but besides manufactured evidence, which was the basis for his conviction. Despite this, his political career has not been completely hampered, and the fresh position of the manager of the psychiatric infirmary in Radecznica indicates strong support from the PiS, especially from Przemysław Czarnek, the head of the Lublin organization structures.
Summary
The case of Andrzej Wanuk, erstwhile president of Zamość, is an example of how those convicted by the court can proceed to execute crucial public functions through political connections. The conviction for giving false evidence and fabricating evidence, though serious, did not prevent Wwiek from taking on an intimate position as a infirmary director, which raises controversy and questions about ethical standards in Polish politics.
