Mateusz Morawiecki officially supports Karol Nawrocki, but according to sources from the Law and Justice, he inactive late hoped that Jarosław Kaczyński would change his head and support him. There are besides any voices suggesting that the erstwhile Prime Minister is preparing to leave the party, according to Onet.
Although Morawiecki formally supports the Nawrock campaign, his social media activity suggests something else. The erstwhile Prime Minister, whose profile on the X platform is observed by more than 750,000 people, seldom promotes the PiS candidate – is limited mainly to sharing his entries. Instead, it focuses on its own actions, reminding of the situation of 2020, erstwhile – even though it officially supported Andrzej Duda's run – he led his own route, building his position in the party.
Then Morawiecki had a possible of promotion and hoped that after the end of his Prime Minister's word Kaczyński would trust him as the leader of the right. However, the reality changed – after the PiS lost the parliamentary elections in 2023 Morawiecki not only lost his office as Prime Minister, but besides lost his rivalry for leadership in the parliamentary club with Mariusz Błaszczak.
A Lost Chance for Presidentship
Morawiecki's ambition, however, reached further – he hoped to nominate Law and Justice in the presidential election. He had strong assets, including advanced designation among organization voters. However, the problem was his past – many Confederate voters, whose support could be crucial in the second round, would not forgive him for the decisions made during the pandemic, especially the introduction of economical restrictions. In the end Kaczyński bet on Karol Nawrocki, who was not associated with the controversial decisions of the PiS government, although at the same time remains more unknown to voters.
The polls show that Nawrocki does not even scope the level of support for the Law and Justice itself, which may be an obstacle to winning the election. Moreover, any studies indicate that Sławomir Mentzen of the Confederacy is starting to overtake him, which caused concern in Nowogrodzka and gave Morawiecki hope to change the situation.
Waiting for a twist
According to 1 of the PiS politicians close to Kaczyński, Morawiecki counted to the very end that the president of PiS would decide on a "changeling" – he would consider Nawrocki's choice to be besides risky and at the last minute he would be betting on the erstwhile Prime Minister. But that did not happen.
Morawiecki continues to formally support the Nawrocki campaign, but does so to a limited extent. Interestingly, many of his people were included in the candidate's election staff – Paweł Chiefernaker, associated with Joachim Brudziński, who made an informal alliance with Morawiecki or Tomasz Matynia, the erstwhile head of the Government Information Centre during his premiere.
Possible break-up with the PiS?
There is speculation in the organization that Morawiecki is considering leaving Law and Justice – especially if Nawrocki loses the presidential election. Then he could come to Kaczyński and say "I told you so?" If the president does not take him seriously, the erstwhile Prime Minister may effort to prove his political strength by claiming that a group of MPs who are ready to leave the club are behind him.
Some PiS politicians believe that Morawiecki may act preemptively – fearing that he will be removed from the organization after a possible association of the PiS with the Confederation, for which his character is unacceptable.
An additional problem for Morawiecki is the investigation into the Government strategical Reserve Agency. The prime suspect, Paul Szopa, is charged with the evidence of his close associates who have been charged with corruption. Morawiecki himself is besides active in the proceedings concerning the organisation of the "coil election" in 2020, which could further complicate his political future.
