The chat was not protected from the hazard of interception, and "The Atlantic" writer Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly attached to the group. The talks included Vice president J.D. Vance, defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Waltz admitted work for the incident.
Trump defended Waltz.
In an interview with Fox News advisor Donald Trump described the situation as "ashaming", while attacking Goldberg, whom he called "journalist scum". Although he did not supply evidence, he suggested that the writer might have been intentionally included in the group.
